When not onstage, Berling cheered for her peers from the audience. “It’s exciting that you get to wake up every day and learn something new.”Īt the informance, Berling played in the percussion ensemble and participated in several other pieces. “I love to be here,” rising sixth-grader Jillian Berling said. The camp became an official Meriden Public Schools program three summers ago. This year, fourth graders had the opportunity to participate, whereas previous summers, the camp only included fifth through eighth graders. This is the 16th summer of the camp, which first took place at the Augusta Curtis Cultural Center and then at the Meriden YMCA before moving to Edison Middle School after the pandemic. ![]() “It creates a sense of belonging and gives them a place to figure out who they are and what that means to them.”Ĭarroll and eight other staff members from music departments across the Meriden Public Schools help run the program alongside several high school volunteers. ![]() ![]() “Music can offer an outlet to students or a new way to express themselves they may not have been able to before,” Edison Middle School music teacher Aubrie Carroll said. Students also participated in electives involving musical theater and dance, music technology, jazz improvisation, chamber music, marching band, and music and visual arts. Held at Edison Middle School from July 10 to Friday, the camp included over 100 students ranging from fourth to eighth grade playing in the band, orchestra and choir. It was not a typical performance but rather an “informance,” a less formal but no less celebratory culmination of two weeks of exploratory musical learning at Meriden’s Summer Music Camp.
